ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES & STUDENT LIFE
(Aligned with the Turkish National Curriculum)
At BIS, we believe that learning goes beyond the classroom. Through carefully designed learning environments, engaging activities, and strong family partnerships, we support our students’ academic, social, and emotional development.
Learning Through Play & Responsibility
Our teachers understand the powerful role that play has in a child’s growth. In Preschool, learning areas are designed to allow for independent choice, helping children feel safe, confident, and curious. In Primary, this continues through project-based learning that supports academic learning and character development.
We plan activities that build personal responsibility and awareness. Students take part in hands-on, age-appropriate projects both in the classroom and in areas like the hobby garden, which encourage observation, independence, and active participation.
Social Development & Language Use
On our multilingual and multicultural campus, students build skills in:
Human relationships
Communication
Use of foreign language (English)
Children interact with peers from diverse backgrounds during group activities and play time. These experiences help them develop empathy, cultural awareness, and effective communication.
Events & Celebrations
Throughout the school year, BIS hosts a range of events designed to support social-emotional development, build community, and celebrate student achievement. These include:
National Day Celebrations (e.g., 23 April, 29 October, 10 November)
Concerts, drama shows, sports festivals, art exhibitions
Swimming galas, awards ceremonies, and seasonal celebrations
These events are supported by our Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and offer students rich experiences that bring together academics, the arts, and Turkish values.
In-School Team System (Houses)
All Primary School students are assigned to one of three teams: Maple, Cedar, or Oak. Students earn points for their Houses through their academic effort, behaviour, and participation in school life. The winning team receives the House Trophy at the end of the school year—celebrating teamwork, discipline, and achievement.
Weekly Assemblies & Certificates
Every week, Primary students gather for assemblies that cover themes such as:
Health and wellbeing
Drama performances in Turkish
Student Council updates
Celebration of birthdays and team points
Each week, selected students receive a “Student of the Week” certificate, recognising outstanding academic, social, or emotional growth. Subject teachers may also nominate students for success in areas like art, music, PE, or ICT.
An annual Awards Ceremony honours students for special achievements and talents.
Support for Special Needs
Teachers observe each child individually and monitor developmental progress. If needed, they collaborate with the Learning Support Unit, who observes the student in various settings (lessons, breaks, mealtimes, play). Parents are informed of the results, and any necessary support or external guidance is arranged.
Parent Collaboration
We value strong, consistent communication with families. Key practices include:
Parent-Teacher Meetings held each October and April
Progress Reports sent twice annually (December & June)
Regular “Coffee Mornings” to bring parents together with school leadership in an informal setting
A proactive Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) supporting school activities and charitable initiatives
Parent Information & Communication
Monthly bulletins summarising Preschool and Primary activities
Periodic Parent Newsletters prepared by our Communications Department
On-campus Notice Boards displaying current menus, circulars, newsletters, and general announcements
At BIS, our student life programme complements the academic journey outlined in the Turkish National Curriculum, ensuring that students thrive not just in exams, but in life. Through partnerships with families and a rich programme of events and activities, we build a learning community rooted in national values, personal growth, and joyful discovery.
